Hello everyone,
Today I would like to share with you all a big reason why people give up on dieting and exercise. THE SCALE! This measuring device works great for produce and other commodities to give you an idea of value. Unfortunately a lot of people tend to depend on this item as a measuring device of success for weight loss. This an absolutely insane way to measure how you are coming along in your goals because exercising especially when you really have not previously worked out tends to build muscle that you probably never had. Fat weighs approximately .9 as compared to 1.06 kilograms for muscle (check here for more info as I used this site as a reference.) As you can see if you rely on a scale alone you can really get discouraged as you move along in your fitness program. Secondly some may say that a BMI index can be used to measure body fat and that it is pretty accurate. According to new studies by Michigan State University and Saginaw Valley University this is not the best way to measure Body fat.(http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/03/070305202535.htm) The BMI test is a good way to check your initial rankings but should be taken with a grain of salt. Human beings are a complex organism and simply using one way to measure a person can result in totally different results for another. For example African Americans tend to have more dense bone structure than that of a Caucasian or an Asian persons. Which if not taken into calculations may throw off results. Truly the only real way to get very accurate measurements is by using bio-electrical impedance, skin fold calipers and the more advanced water weighing method. All these methods are very accurate, but lets be real unless you want to pay some money for the doctor, or your a professional athlete it's not practical. So we try the best we can with what you have, don't you think?
With this in mind I feel that the best way to honestly measure to get correct and more accurate results is to take measurements and weight and combine both and see if you are making progress. For example if you weigh your self and it comes to bear that you have gained 3 pounds in the last week you may be extremely shocked, You've been working your tail off, and gained weight! Then take your measurements and you will most likely find that you have lost inches around many areas that you measure before. For example I had a client that had only lost 1.25 pounds each week but had lost a total of 13 inches of fat from her waist, legs, arms and bust. Needless to say she was upset initially and had I not instructed her to take measurements she may have become discouraged and quit. Luckily she is very happy and continues to push herself every day and make gains to increase her health. By using Shakeology and doing her workouts 3 times a day she continues to make progress and has quit spending extra money on Weight Watchers and primarily does her exercise and drinks Shakeology religiously which saves her about 30 dollars every month.
In conclusion if you really want to measure your success use a combination of measurements do not simply rely on a scale or just a BMI calculator. If you need help with BMI calculations this website is quite helpful in getting an accurate measurement. I hope this will be helpful to those of you out there that are on "The Path" to wellness and a Healthier you.
